Chapter 33
Employee Development: Building Skills for Growth
Last reviewed 1 January 2026
Employee development is the investment an organisation makes in growing the capability of its people. It encompasses formal training, on-the-job learning, mentoring, coaching, and exposure to new responsibilities. While development is often associated with large organisations with dedicated learning budgets, its principles apply equally, and its returns are proportionally significant, in smaller businesses.
Employees who are developed tend to perform at a higher level, stay with the organisation longer, and contribute more creatively and proactively to its work. Development signals to employees that the employer values them beyond their current contribution, which is one of the most powerful drivers of engagement and retention. Conversely, the absence of development opportunity is consistently cited as one of the primary reasons employees leave, a cost that far exceeds the investment in training.
Development activities need not be expensive. Formal training programmes are valuable but represent only one option. Structured mentoring by a senior colleague, assignment to a stretch project, participation in cross-functional work, and regular performance coaching all build capability at low cost.
Employee Development Plan Template
The following template should be used when documenting individual development plans, which are most effectively completed during the performance review cycle.
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Employee Name | |
| Current Role | |
| Skills to Develop | |
| Development Activity | |
| Support Required | |
| Target Completion Date |
Tip: Development is a Retention Tool Employers who invest in development do not lose employees faster, they retain them longer. The concern that trained employees will leave is understandable but statistically unsupported. Employees who feel invested in are significantly more likely to remain. The greater risk is failing to develop employees and losing them to competitors who will. |
