KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AT WORK: TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
- Minimum wage:TT$20.50 an hour (TT$3,553.33 a month for a 40-hour week).
- Overtime:if you earn TT$30.75 an hour or less, 1.5x for the first 4 extra hours, then 2x, then 3x.
- NIS:your employer must register you and pay both shares. Check your record with the NIBTT.
- Maternity:14 weeks after 12 months' service. You cannot be dismissed for being pregnant.
- Dismissed?You need a fair reason and a fair hearing. A dispute must be reported within 6 months, through a union.
- Retrenched?Severance after more than 1 year of service.
- Unsafe work?You can refuse work that puts you in serious and imminent danger. Report it straight away.
- Discrimination?Complain to the Equal Opportunity Commission within 6 months.
Put it in writing. Keep your payslips.
